Things to Do
Mohican State Park
This 1,100-acre park features wooded trails, river access, and scenic gorges. Visitors can hike, mountain bike, or paddle along the Clear Fork River. The area includes a covered bridge, picnic spots, and multiple overlooks. Canoe and kayak rentals are available during the warmer months.
Snow Trails
Located near Mansfield, this family-owned winter resort offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing with extensive snowmaking and grooming—especially on beginner-friendly terrain. The lodge features food, drinks, and kid’s ski programs, while night lighting adds a fun twist.
Malabar Farm State Park
Once the home of Pulitzer-winning author Louis Bromfield, this 900-acre estate offers guided tours of his 32-room home, hiking trails, farm animal areas, and wagon rides. Perfect for a farm visit and walk through scenic plateau landscape. Expect to see Hollywood history—Bogart and Bacall were married here.
Gorman Nature Center
Gorman Nature Center, managed by Richland County Park District, preserves 150 acres of farms, forests, prairies, ponds, and streams with more than five miles of trails open year-round for hiking and cross-country skiing. An indoor visitor center features live native animals and exhibits, and staff host weekly public programs such as Animal Feeding Day.
Ohio State Reformatory
The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield is a historic Romanesque revival prison built between 1886 and 1910. It’s known for being the filming site of The Shawshank Redemption and houses the adjacent Ohio Corrections History Museum. Visitors can take guided historical tours, ghost walks, and even an electric chair tour. It features the world’s tallest freestanding steel cell block—six tiers high.
Apple Hill Orchards
Apple Hill is a working orchard offering seasonal fruit picking, baked goods, and pressed cider. Guests can shop at the on-site market, explore pumpkin patches, and enjoy hayrides and pony rides during fall weekends. Fresh apple donuts are made daily in-season.
Deer Ridge Golf Club
This public 18-hole course features rolling terrain, tree-lined fairways, and bent-grass greens. A full driving range, putting green, and the on-site Black Dog Tavern make it a convenient stop for golf and casual dining. Designed by Brian Huntley in 1998.
Kingwood Center Botanical Garden
Kingwood Center Gardens is a 47-acre former estate of industrialist Charles Kelley King. The gardens include themed areas such as a sunken garden, rose collections, tropical greenhouse, and woodland trails, all surrounding a 1926 French Provincial mansion. It opened to the public in 1953 and hosts seasonal plant displays, including nearly 500 rose varieties in the Rose Garden.
Mid‑Ohio Sports Car Course
Mid‑Ohio Sports Car Course, built in 1962 near Lexington, spans over 330 acres with two main track layouts: a 2.4‑mile, 15‑turn and a 2.26‑mile, 13‑turn version. It hosts major events like the IndyCar “Honda Indy 200”, IMSA, Trans‑Am, ARCA, NASCAR, and MotoAmerica. Seating includes 12,000 in the grandstands plus natural observation mounds raising capacity to over 75,000. It’s known for the Thunder Valley downhill straight and rolling spectator mounds.
Pleasant Hill Lake
Pleasant Hill Lake is a 783-acre man-made reservoir created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1936. The lake sits behind a 113-foot earth-fill dam and stretches across Ashland and Richland counties. It's a popular spot for boating, kayaking, and fishing, with species like largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Seasonal water releases from the dam help support steady fish populations and healthy aquatic conditions.

Buckeye Express Diner
This roadside diner is housed in a red train car and decorated with railroad memorabilia, making it a hit with kids and nostalgic travelers. The menu covers burgers, fries, breakfast platters, and homemade milkshakes. Known for large portions and quick service, it’s especially popular with road-trippers stopping off I-71.
Black Dog Tavern
Black Dog Tavern, attached to Deer Ridge Golf Club in Bellville, features a full-service restaurant and bar in a timber-clad clubhouse with scenic course views. The menu includes comfort items like prime‑rib pasta, bourbon BBQ chicken salad, fried pickle chips, and homemade desserts. It’s open year-round and offers outdoor seating, making it a relaxed spot to enjoy craft beers and seasonal specials overlooking the fairways.
Der Dutchman Restaurant
Der Dutchman offers a full menu of traditional Amish-style dishes, including broasted chicken, roast beef, stuffing, noodles, and mashed potatoes. The restaurant also features a bakery with pies, breads, and cookies made fresh daily. Guests can choose from menu service or an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Phoenix Brewing Company
This small-batch brewery operates out of a restored 1914 mortuary in downtown Mansfield. The tasting room features exposed brick, local artwork, and a rotating list of house-made IPAs, porters, stouts, and seasonal beers. Live music, trivia nights, and food trucks are frequent additions. Phoenix Brewing focuses on high-quality, all-malt recipes.
